Sure, Yahoo's stock has been under pressure, the company has a fifth the market value of Google, executives are calling for a change in the company's strategy, memos are leaking. But that doesn't mean that every single executive departure is a blow to the company. Case in point: David Katz, former media guy from CBS and head of Yahoo Sports, who left last week. In a particularly credulous item in stock news site, TheStreet.com, a talented Katz is the latest exec to jump ship. Try this instead: Katz is the latest under-performing exec to use Yahoo's troubles as cover; and, for jump ship, read thrown overboard. The inside story, after the jump.
Can you believe the article from The Street.com "Yahoo! Talent Keeps Trickling", where David Katz is hailed as "talented" and was the major one who pushed video. I'm in the Media Group and David Katz did nothing!!! He was a loser from the start and contributed nada to our organization. Seriously, the guy couldn't even hire a GM of Sports. Brian Grey, our former Sports GM left shortly afer Katz arrived (pushed out..sad because he was great) and it took David up until recently to hire another GM...HELLO. What kind of leader are you if you can't even hire a key role like that! Plus the fact that he did a shitty job of filling it himself..folks in his org thought he was a JOKE and never met with his team because he was above it and had no time for them! Sports is a well oiled machine and can run on it's own but there is nothing that Katz did to make it better or any of the other properties that he had. In the end, entertainment, movies, etc. got taken away from him and he was reduced to being HEAD OF STUDIOS... sad and as a token mgmt let him keep Sports so he could save face and not look like a total failure!!!! Of course, with all the golden parachutes these guys have, Yahoo! has to let a slacker like that leave on a good note rather than putting it out there that he was fired! It's very sad because this article should have a bit of a silver lining but David's departure is an attempt to clean house... feeble and long over due but it is a small step on Yahoo!'s part and should be seen in a positive light!!
