Hewlett-Packard, in legal jeopardy after a leak investigation got out of hand, gets away relatively lightly: a $14.5m fine for wiretapping. But it's not the end of the story: California's attorney general will today try to broker a settlement between the computer maker and reporters whom it investigated. Foremost among them, Pui-Wing Tam from the Wall Street Journal, who has had a bad year: when HP investigators weren't rifling through her trash, the diminutive and mild-mannered reporter was being bullied by Marc Benioff, Silicon Valley's most publicity-crazed mogul.
