Red Herring, the troubled magazine and events group, may have hit on a new way to make up for lackluster advertising revenues. Alex Vieux's group, owner of a once-legendary title, is selling off speaker slots at its spring conference. If you want to join a panel at Red Herring Spring, in Monterey, just fill in a form on the website. I'm sure the approval process isn't too onerous. The only downside: all attendees, including speakers, have to pay a "membership fee" of $2,500. The conference website features, appropriately, a shark.
