    The value of social news

If Stumble Upon, a site which suggests interesting new pages for web users to visit, is indeed being sold to Ebay for the rumored purchase price, that's disappointing for other social media sites. Garrett Camp's startup was one of the fastest-growing internet properties of 2006; at about 900,000 unique visitors in the US in March, the site already has about a third the audience of Digg, the leading social news site. The rumored purchase price, of some $40m, will provide the Stumble Upon's founders and angel investors with an excellent return, because there was no venture capital round; but the deal values the Digg audience only in the $100m-$150m range, and the entire sector below $500m. A revolution in news, maybe, but with more losers than winners.
