Index adjustment to bring boon, bust to Valley companies

The Russell 3000, a stock index from Tacoma-based Russell Investments, will be making an annual adjustment to listed companies Friday, and the Valley is a net gainer, with ten companies removed and fourteen added. For instance, chip maker Transmeta is in while open source software repository Sourceforge is out. Why does it matter? Because index funds have been popular among smaller investors who want to limit risk, and position changes mean big money flowing out of dropped listings and into those added. [Mercury News]
