I'll give Yahoo's culture this much: It is democratic and egalitarian, treating all employees equally. Equally like children. Yahoo's "start wearing purple" campaign was a clue — really, where do you see adults wearing purple, outside of a science-fiction convention? But I didn't realize how institutional the infantilization was until I got an eyeful of Yahoo's management-training materials. They are Web 2.0 meets The One-Minute Manager — all bubbly, rounded corners, big quotes, and emoticons. There's even a mirror, to remind Yahoo's leadership what preciously unique snowflakes they are. The richest part for me was the letter from CEO Jerry Yang, calling for "managerial courage." If only he could take his own advice. Here's Yahoo flash-card-sized advice for managers:

Jerry Yang's letter to Yahoo leaders calls for "integrity and trust."

"May overwhelm others with unfocused activities" — isn't that Yahoo management's job?

    •
Look in the mirror, Yahoo manager, and keep telling yourself you are the only thing that matters.

The customer is the only person who can fire you. And judging by Yahoo's sales, he is.

    Yahoo Retreats from Hollywood

Two years after he left, the ghost of TV executive Lloyd Braun still haunts Yahoo. Which is why a report of lost perks in Yahoo's L.A. office turned into an evisceration of the ex-exec. The Los Angeles Times carried a report about lost perks in Santa Monica, the home of the Yahoo Media Group:
    Yahoo Layoffs

Yahoo songwriter uploads layoff angst to YouTube

"Screw You, Yahoo!" is a "9 to 5" anthem for the YouTube generation, a cri de cubicle for a creative class which discovered Internet companies are just as stultifying as the rest of corporate America. It's also really terrible, in a way that veers on high camp, but doesn't quite cross the border. Mi...
    Yahoo Layoffs

Laid-off Yahoos packing heat for Jerry Yang?

Yahoo had set plans for a holiday party in L.A. right after Wednesday's mass layoffs — and it invited the victims. But just in case any were armed, Jerry Yang's guards set up metal detectors. No one seems to think the right employees were let go at the bloated Internet giant.
