A reminder that Yahoo still has content ambitions, despite scaling back its Hollywood expansion and jettisoning Lloyd Braun, the TV exec brought in to make Yahoo a full-spectrum media company. The troubled Sunnyvale internet giant is creating a new site — called
OMG — for entertainment gossip.
The property will bring original news and clips from NBC's Access Hollywood show to Yahoo's still-huge audience. It's a smart move, way more so than most of Yahoo's experiments with short-form dramatic "webisodes", and coverage of one-off events. Celebrity gossip is one of the few guaranteed audience draws. Search technology: pah. Web viewers want Paris Hilton in tears. Rival AOL's entertainment site, TMZ, is one of the Time Warner unit's few success stories. The only question: will Access Hollywood allow its TV show to be scooped by the web. My bet: not.
