Craig Newmark's trademark humility is on display, again, in this audio interview with David Weinberger: "I had no idea that this would become a thing of small significance," says the Craigslist founder. "It was just a little hobby. When I started I had nothing in mind more than telling people about arts and technology events in San Francisco. Frankly, I have no vision whatsoever." Of course, Newmark's modesty is false. To hew so closely to the needs of users, and resist all greed and hubris, requires a fixity of purpose that's incredibly rare in the web industry. But the nebbishy pioneer of online classifieds demonstrates one point: vision is one of those things that some people simply possess; it's those who don't who are the ones with a need to boast.
