fire2.jpgDigg, the social news site that inspired a thousand knock-offs, was created (well, commissioned) by Slashdot user Kevin Rose after the venerable tech news site dismissed his suggestions. Now the old green lady has introduced a "Slashdot Firehose" page that vaguely reproduces the Digg method of listing headlines and allowing users to vote them up or down the page. But compare these current Digg headlines to some Slashdot heds.

    Digg

    • 10 Things NOT to Do If You Are Arrested
    • First spy shots of the 2008 Toyota FJ Cruiser
    • Ohio Law Would Require Women To Get A Man's Permission To Have An Abortion
    • Show Soccer Skills on Youtube; Get Recruited by Manchester United!

    Slashdot Firehose

    • Make Life Easy with XML Schema Standard Library
    • Mac users' Internet experience to remain seamless
    • Hacker does a DIY Amiga in FPGA
    • Symantec CEO says bad service fix only temporary

This comparison is, of course, unfair, like comparing Fox News to KQED. Of course, we all know who gets the bigger audience.

It Costs Digg $5 Million a Year to Run the Internet

Perhaps Digg really is the future of the news business. The headline-discussion site, once an icon of the Web 2.0 movement, is losing millions of dollars a year. BusinessWeek's Spencer Ante got ahold of Digg's financial statements.

Kevin Rose's cold tweeting in your face

Digg poster boy Kevin Rose is so hot that 726 people have already subscribed to a Twitter stream on which Rose pretends to be a head cold. For context, New York Times reporter Matt Richtel has 819 followers to the novel he's posting as tweets.
