'True fans willing to pay the most'

Jeff Fluhr of StubhubIn the past, Jeff Fluhr, chief exec of Stubhub, has mistaken purchasing power for devotion to a team. The boss of the online ticket reseller, defending scalping to the Wall Street Journal, had no sympathy for spectators who couldn't afford marked-up tickets: "I would argue that the true fans are the ones who are willing to pay the most for the tickets." This week, the venture, a business school project, sold to eBay, the online auction giant, for $310m. So suck it up, sports obsessives: not only have Fluhr and his investors made a fortune off your desperation to watch the game; but the Stubhub boss now has the means to be a truer fan than you will ever be.
